Synopsis
Slewfoot takes us to 1600s Puritan New England where Abitha, a fiery young woman trapped in a restrictive marriage, crosses paths with an ancient forest spirit called Slewfoot. What starts as a spark of rebellion quickly spirals into something far darker and more dangerous, blending witchcraft, folklore, and the supernatural in the best way. It’s moody, atmospheric, and filled with tension, with a touch of dark humor along the way.
My Thoughts 💭
🔍 Why I Picked This Up:
Honestly, the moment I saw the cover art by Brom and read the blurb hinting at witchcraft and dark folklore, I was hooked. Plus, I’m a sucker for tales of dark folklore and witchcraft clashing with oppressive systems. 🕯️
✨ What I Loved:
I absolutely adored this book. I’m still at a loss for words, and I feel like anything I write won’t be enough to encompass how amazing it was. The atmosphere was insanely well done—it felt so real, almost like I was in Abitha’s shoes. The buildup was intriguing and infuriating (in the best way), and not a single part of it felt boring. I found myself flying through 200 pages in one night because I couldn’t put it down by the halfway point. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and really enhanced the experience. 🎨 Abitha was such an amazing character, and I still feel so bad for Edward. This book hooked me hard and didn’t let go.
✍️ Room for Improvement:
Honestly, I don’t have much to critique. The pacing, atmosphere, and character development were on point. I suppose I could say that the buildup might be slow for some readers, but for me, it just made the payoff that much sweeter. 📖
🥇 Overall Takeaway:
If you love dark folklore, witchcraft, lush illustrations, and strong, complex characters like Abitha, you need this on your shelf. Would I recommend it? Absolutely, especially for fans atmospheric dark fantasy with develish themes. 🐐 This book deserves the full five the stars.
💡 Additions:
Mood Board: Dark forest scenes, shadowy witchy symbols, Puritanical village imagery, Brom’s haunting illustrations.
Favorite Quote: “Sadly, one cannot know the best of times until they are gone, they are lost. How I would give the rest of my days to have just one of those days back.”
